Fear makes you do unthinkable things

Fear makes you do unthinkable things

When I go to the supermarket, besides buying bags of Haribo liquorice and soy burgers, I buy books. So it’s very funny when I see  the following prices passing on the display of the cashier: “tomatoes 3 euro – tampon 4 euro – book 17 euro”.
There are some books that I already know that I will finish, others which represent a challenge (and I always loose) and others that tire me after the first few lines.
I used to feel guilty if I didn’t read a book until the end, but now things have changed. If I don’t like it, I just don’t like it.
After buying some ice cream and some pizza, yesterday I bought a book written by Stefano Benni, a master of the Italian literature. I bought it for two reasons: its photography (there is a picture of him while he is screaming) and the description of fear:

Fear is a great passion, if it is real it must be boundless and growing. You have to die out of fear. Everything else is just small turmoil, a squirt of blood that you can clean with your napkin. In the abyss you can’t find comfortable steps“.

The use of that word “must” punched me in the belly, because fear is fear. Fear has big balls, so it has all the rights to be boundless. That is exactly why fear makes you do unthinkable things.

Sometimes you need to feel scared. It is the same kind of need that drives you towards strong emotions: it makes you feel alive, it makes you think, it helps you taking decisions.

You are what you eat, they say. I say that you are what you choose.
